Setting up a GRADE or GMADE Database Connection

When setting up a connection to a networked GRADE or GMADE database for a client machine or setting up a GRADE or GMADE database server for the first time, the values in the "Database Connection" fields should be set as follows.

These values will need to be obtained from the database server itself.

Server Type:  This should be set to "Microsoft SQL Server."

Friendly Name:  This is user-defined and will be the name that appears in the "Select Database" screen.

Hostname:  This is usually the name of the computer being used.  If the computer name does not work, the IP address should be used instead.  If you are not sure how to get the hostname, instructions on how to get this value are below.

Port:  1433 is the default value for SQL Server.  If SQL Server Express is being used it will need to be setup to use a specific port.

User Name:  The username that was set up on the database server for use with GRADE or GMADE.

Password:  The password that corresponds to that username.

Instance:  The name of the database instance.  MSSQLSERVER works with the full version of SQL Server.  If SQL Server Express is being used, this should be changed to SQLEXPRESS.  If neither one works, see below for instructions on how to get this value.

Catalog:  This should be left blank unless catalogs are being used on the database.

NOTE:  If the "Instance" and "Catalog" fields are not present, then the software will need to be updated via the "Check for Updates" option in the Help menu.  If the machine does not have an Internet connection, please contact Technical Support for assistance.

To get the hostname and instance name, open SQL Server Management Studio on the database server and login to the database.  Near the top of the window you will see something similar to the screenshot below. The hostname is before the slash, and the instance name is after it.
