40,000 Selected Words provides a tool for professionals to facilitate teaching of consonant sounds and blends. The application includes approximately 40,000 words that may be used to create customized sets of words. Twelve sample sets are also included with the software package. Words are categorized by specific phoneme, the position of the sound in a word, the length of the word, and the combination of blends and clusters within a word. The sample sets were chosen based on the frequency of errors in the English language and on development of normal language.

40,000 Selected Words provides a mechanism to view both sample sets and custom sets. Also, users can change and delete sets they have created, as well as the order of items in a set. In addition, users can print a list of words assigned to a set.

The software includes the phonemes, sets, and words. It does not include the pages found in the hard-bound manual.
